Unique Customs

“The Flutter”

One of our unique customs at Lodge Southern Cross

The Flutter is used to greet our guests at every Festive Board at Lodge Southern Cross 44.  It symbolizes our enthusiasm for your welcome and our sheer appreciativeness of your visit. The gesture of recognition and gratitude was brought to our lodge by J.J. Miller.  It takes it name from when the first settlers arrived in Australia on the beaches of Botany Bay, they were greeted not by humans, but by the birds and their fluttering wings.

Eyes, Front, Present, Fire

Another unique custom at Lodge Southern Cross, instead of  applause the brethren use “eyes, front, present, fire.” Be prepared to not hear any usual applause by the brethren! We invite you to visit our Lodge to experience the true hospitality of a Freemason’s Lodge Australian style!
